Description:

JAMES C. RICE
(1829 - 1864) Union brigadier general who fought at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg where he is credited with securing Little Round Top against a flanking movement, killed at Spotsylvania. Scarce fine content war-date A.L.S. "J. C. Rice Col. 44th N.Y.", 2pp. 8vo., New York, Oct. 25, 1862 to New York Gov. Edwin D. Morgan. In part: "...By Special Order No. 282...by command of Major Genl. McClellan, I am ordered to report to your Excellency, 'for the purpose of taking charge of such drafted men, as may be placed under his command, for the regiments serving in the army'. On the receipt of this order, I was quite low with the Typhoid fever at Washington...I have by slow stages reached New York, where I am now resting. I feel it my duty to report to you...as soon as I gain strength by rest, I shall report in person...will you be so as to inform me by letter, at what time, it will be necessary for me to report to you...". Near fine. At Second Manassas, Rice took command of the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, V Corps when its commander, Daniel Butterfield took command of the consolidated 1st and 2nd Brigades. Here he returns to his old command, the 44th New York, which he would lead at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg.
