Description:

(1823-1887) Confederate brigadier general who was present at the bombing of Fort Sumter, and saw action at Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Bentonville. Good content, war date A.L.S., 1p. legal folio, Charleston, Sept. 10, 1863, to Major Gen. Thomas Jordan (1819-1895), Chief of Staff to Pierre G. T. Beauregard, and a major operative of the Confederate Secret Service, regarding a recommendation to improve the defenses of Charleston. In part: '....I have the honor to suggest that the militia troops now serving in the district be disbanded or at least be withdrawn from the Confederate Service. Two regiments of six months troops are on their way to the city to report to me...These troops will be without camp and garrison equipage...By putting these regiments in the place of the militia now doing guard duty in the city of Charleston they can be sheltered and the duty will be as well if not better performed...I am informed there is a great difficulty in getting the troops in this division of the militia to organize on the same footing...I must say that the duty performed by the Militia is unsatisfactory and will I fear continue to be so. The interest of the service I am satisfied will be greatly promoted by the adoption of the course I suggest...' Ripley was criticized for his command at the Battle of Antietam and was reassigned in 1863 to South Carolina. In this capacity he oversaw various improvements to the defenses around Charleston, illustrated here. A few days prior to this letter Union forces successfully occupied Fort Wagner at the mouth of Charleston Harbor, but despite this Confederate forces still controlled the city until Sherman's armies marched through in 1865.
