Description:

(1827 - 1863) 'Old Flintlock', Confederate brigadier general and commander of the famed 'Orphan Brigade' so called because once their home city of Lexington, Kentucky was occupied by Union troops, they could not return home again. Hanson was mortally wounded at the Battle of Murfreesboro. Excessively rare twice-signed book from Hanson's library: 'A Manuel of Parliamentary Practice...' by Thomas Jefferson (Philadelphia: 1853), 196pp. 8vo., in brown boards, gilt title on a badly chipped spine, with some segments since dislocated. Hanson very boldly places his ownership signature on both the front paste-down and the front flyleaf as 'R W Hanson'. There is also a 1873 presentation from his widow Virginia to Richard Reid, and a 1928 presentation inscription from Richard Reid Rogers to the Mt. Sterling Library in August, 1928. Moderate foxing to the signed pages and a few of the initial pages as well, else very good. A very rare signature.
