Description:

RONALD REAGAN
(1911 - 2004) Fortieth President of the United States who served for two terms (1981-1989) and contributed to the fall of European Communism. T.L.S. "Ron" as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, July 9, 1981 to AP reporter, spy and intelligence expert John Koeller. Fine content, in part: "...I appreciate you giving me all the information that you gathered. It adds a great deal to my knowledge of what is going on over there in the captive nations. I was particularly interested...about the resurgence of religion...religion might very well turn out to be the Soviet's Achilles' heel. I've had some reports that it is even going on in an underground way in Russia itself...I'm being criticized for not having made a great speech outlining what would be the Reagan foreign policy. I have a foreign policy; I'm working on it. I just don't happen to think that it's wise to always stand up and put in quotation marks what your foreign policy is. I'm a believer in quiet diplomacy...we've had several quite triumphant experiences by using that method. The problem is, you can't talk about it afterward or then you can't do it again...". Signature just a bit lightened, slightly sun toned, else very good.
