ROCKEFELLER (1839 - 1937) American industrialist and philanthropist who organized Standard Oil and virtually monopolized the industry until he was forced by a Supreme Court ruling to dissolve the company and break it up into regional producers and refiners. Printed D.S. by John D. Rockefeller and Henry M. Flagler, 1p., 4to., New York, April 2, 1885, a Standard Oil stock certificate for one hundred shares issued to Henry L. Davis. Davis was a member of the Standard Oil Case and Can Committee until 1889, and was involved in revealing trust workings through testimony to the New York Senate and U.S. Congress in 1888.
