583. JOHN D. ROCKEFELLER (1839-1937) American industrialist and philanthropist who organized Standard Oil and virtually monopolized the industry until he was forced by a Supreme Court ruling to dissolve the company and break it up into regional producers and refiners. A fine D.S. 1p. oblong 4to., April 5, 1882, a stock certificate for one hundred shares in Standard Oil Trust, boldly signed "J. D. Rockefeller" as President. Countersigned by H.M. FLAGLER, Standard Oil magnate known for his creation of Florida East Coast Railway and extending it south. He signs as Secretary. Handsomely matted in brown with a portrait of Rockefeller, and set into a carved gilt frame. Fine condition, not examined out of frame. $2,000-3,000
