Lee (1807 1870 Confederate General and commander of the Army of Northern Virginia arguably the most brilliant commander of field armies in American history A fascinating D.S. 2pp. 4to., [Fortress Monroe 1833] in which Lee helps to organize a dance The terms set forth note that the subscribers will furnish for the Ladies in the Dancing Hall refreshments consisting of Cake Sugar and Wine cordial and lemonade For the Gentlemen a Whist Room furnished with Cards Brandy Gin Whiskey and cold supper And each Party is to be considered as closed for the evening whenever the Ladies retired The subscribers sign on the second page and include Lee Joseph E. Johnston, Benjamin Huger, William Maynadier, G. H. Ringgold, Rufus King J. M. Washington and about thirty others The document is damaged showing tears in the text no paper loss stains and mounting with old glue Lees signature is very good Johnston has a stain affecting one letter Huger shows wear Still a good very early example
