Description:

RICHARD M. NIXON
(1913 - 1994) Thirty-seventh President of the United States who led during the Vietnam War, re-opened diplomatic ties with China and the U.S.S.R., resigned his office due to the Watergate scandal. Fine content T.L.S. "RN" as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 4to., Washington, Feb. 14, 1972 to Rep. Del Clawson. In part: "...It was heartening to receive your strong expression of support for my...Indochina peace initiatives...signed by a bi-partisan majority of the House...I am confident history will record that support such as yours during these difficult times contributed significantly to our mutually shared goal -- a full generation of peace. As I embark on my mission to Peking, I want you to know how much I deeply appreciate your thoughts...". Very light soiling, else fine. While Nixon's unprecedented mission to Peking was history-making, opening China to American diplomacy and trade, his Vietnam proposals with Congress bogged down. At the same time, Henry Kissinger would be secretly meeting with representatives of North Vietnam.
