Description:

REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. SIGNED BAPTISMAL CERTIFICATE
(1929-1968) Clergyman and civil rights leader who advocated nonviolent but active and massive confrontation in order to obtain rights for blacks. An outstanding and exquisitely rare early King item, a baptismal certificate signed by King as Pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery. The 7 1/4" x 6 1/2" partly-printed document certifies the baptism of a 28 year-old lady, presumably at Dexter, on September 1, 1957. King has boldly signed his name: "Martin Luther King Jr." as "Pastor" of the church. Sold with an identical birth certificate issued to a relative baptized on the same day, this lady born on June 7, 1952. This example is signed by HUBERT H. EATON (1928- ?), an educator at Howard University who would replace King as pastor at the Dexter Avenue Church. Clearly both King and Eaton had participated in this dual baptism of the two family members. Both documents are in very good to fine condition. This is the first baptismal certificate we''ve ever seen signed by King.
