REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR.
(1929-1968) Clergyman and civil rights leader who advocated nonviolent but active and massive confrontation in order to obtain rights for blacks. KING WILL DEVOTE "MORE TIME WORKING DIRECTLY WITH THE CIVIL RIGHTS STRUGGLE" Good content typed and signed letter "Martin L. King Jr." on Southern Christian Leadership Conference letterhead, one page, approx. 8 1/2" x 11", Atlanta, Sep. 17, 1964, to Anita Este. King sends his regrets for being unable to speak at Paterson State College in Wayne, New Jersey, in part: "...Unfortunately, I have had to make some very hard decisions in the last few weeks. One of the firm decisions I have made is that of spending more time working directly with the civil rights struggle. This means I can only accept a limited number of speaking engagements in the current academic year..." King signs at the conclusion in blue ink. This letter was written only four days after King''s visit to Berlin, during which he managed to cross the Berlin Wall without a passport and speak before more than 3,000 East Germans on his belief in a "common humanity". The letter is matted and framed with a photo of King speaking at a podium. Folds, else very good.
