REPUBLIC OF TEXAS TREASURY WARRANT
Republic of Texas partly-printed Treasury Warrant paying Chief Justice WILLIAM E. 'FIERY' JONES (1808-1871), 2pp. 12mo., May 10, 1845. The document, signed by the Texas Auditor and Comptroller, orders that Jones and his legal associates be paid the sum of $187.50 as compensation for his services rendered in the 4th Judicial District. On the verso, Jones pens a four-line A.D.S. acknowledging receipt of part of the monies allocated to him, signing: 'W. E. Jones'. Very good. WILLIAM E. JONES represented Gonzalez Co. in the Sixth Texas Congress. In 1842, while attending court in Bexas Co., he was captured by Mexican forces under Gen. Adrian Woll. He negotiated the surrender of San Antonio, and was imprisoned by the Mexicans for three months before his negotiated release. During the Civil War, he commanded troops defending the Texas frontier.
