Description:

(TEXAS) EARLIEST KNOWN CREATION OF A TEXAS 'SLAVE PATROL'
An incredible, unique Texas A.D.S., 2pp. legal folio, Cameron, Apr. 10, 1848, a contemporary fair copy retained by the court of a petition signed by ten Texans '...and many others...', addressed to the County Court of DeWitt Co., Texas asking that a slave patrols be established in the county. It reads, in part: '...there is great need of patroles [sic] in our respective Beats - and believing your Hon. body will respectfully consider our distress[?]...we would petition yr Hon court to appoint such person as in your judgement would keep such order and regulation as the Laws require...' On the verso appear two lists of four men proposed as members of slave patrols for the 'Clinton Beat' and 'Cameron Beat' respectively, with one captain for each patrol. The document is docketed with the notation 'Acted upon'. Very good. Slave catching dominated early Texas law activity, due to the fear that slaves would escape to freedom in Mexico. In 1846, almost immediately after gaining statehood, the Texas Legislature ordered county courts to form local slave patrols, with at least half of each patrol to be comprised of slave owners or their proxies. Among those signing were Pitkin Taylor and William 'Buck' Taylor, both killed in the long-running Sutton-Taylor Feud. This is the earliest known Texas slave patrol document known.
