Description:

RELICS OF THE BATTLE OF LONG ISLAND
Good lot of eleven excavated Revolutionary War-era relics, all recovered from the vicinity of Kingsbridge, now part of the Bronx. The items include: a Dutch copper One Duit coin, 3/4" dia., dated 1766, minted in Gelderland in the central eastern part of the Netherlands. The coin is accompanied by an antique identification card, which incorrectly identifies it as a British coin dated 1776; a broken double-edged sword blade, 9 3/4" x 1 1/4", with an attached antique identifying tag, stating that is was found at Marble Hill in Kingsbridge; the cock from a flintlock pistol, 2 1/4" long, minus the upper and lower jaws, with an antique label also stating that it was found at Marble Hill; a copper buckle, 2 1/4" x 1 1/2"; a single-bladed folding knife, 4 3/4" x 1 1/4", with large iron bolsters an a fragment of bone scale still extant on one side; a single-ball scissors-style bullet mold, 6" long; a bone-handled two-tine fork, 7 1/2"long, with one tine broken; a second bone handled fork, 5 1/4" long, missing both tines; a table knife, 6" long, broken off at the tip and missing its handle; a pewter spoon bowl, 2 1/2" long, with a raised rib at the broken-off handle; and a hollow conical object, 3" x 1" dia., with a 1" metal strap on one side, and the remnants of a second strap opposite. This is likely either a flagpole finial, or a spike allowing a flagpole to be pushed into the ground. All are in relic condition, and show expected corrosion and damage. During the Battle of Long Island at the outbreak of the Revolutionary War, the village of King''s Bridge was held by Gen. William Heath, who dispatched every boat at his disposal to evacuate the retreating American troops to Manhattan. Ex. Bannerman''s.
