A CONNECTICUT BROADSIDE ORDERS THE RECRUITMENT OF MILITIA INTO THE CONTINENTAL ARMY, WITH HANDWRITTEN GENERAL''S ORDERS ON THE VERSO
Scarce war-date broadside with pertinent manuscript orders penned on the verso, 8" x 13", Hartford, issued and signed in type by JEDEDIAH STRONG (1738-1802), Clerk of the Connecticut House of Representatives, June 30, 1780. Headed: "At a Meeting of the Governor and Council of Safety,holden at Hartford, 30th June, A.D. 1780." it describes a resolution of the Connecticut General Assembly instructing that 2, 525 men be raised: "...indispensably necessary for the safety of...the United States, and to render successful the operations of the present campaign, that our battalion in the Continental Army be filled to the compliment of five hundred and four men each..." It also instructs the manner in which names brigades are to be manned, and the numbers of volunteers and enlistees to be raised by each. On the verso of this broadside is an A.D.S. of Col. NATHANIEL TERRY of the 19th Connecticut, Enfield, July 5, 17801 who writes "Capt. Foster": "In obedience to orders from Gen''l [Erastus] Wolcott you are directed to Carry the within Act into Execution for as it [?] to your Company. Your quota for six months is: two men...one Sergt & three Privates...you will make return to me..." Very good.
