Description:

RELICS OF FATHER DAMIEN
JOSEPH DE VEUSTER (1840 - 1889) Catholic missionary who dedicated his life in service to lepers on the island of Molokai, contracting and succumbing to the disease himself. A fine pair of relics, prayer cards no doubt issued to mourners at memorial services honoring Damien's work. The first, in French, depicts Damien as a youthful priest and bears a prayer on verso. At lower right corner is a sliver of wood label "de sepulcro" or from the tomb. Along with a similar card from The Netherlands, this time folded and bearing a youthful image on the cover, with an image of the leprosy-stricken missionary on his deathbed on verso. It too contains the same coffin relic, titled "Splinter von de doodskist" or sliver from the tomb. Both fine.
