Description:

REINHARD HEYDRICH
(1904 - 1942) 'The Hangman', Nazi head of the dreaded SS and architect of the 'Final Solution', his assassination in Prague caused in retribution the destruction of Lidice and murder of many of its inhabitants. HEYDRICH SEEKS A PROMOTION FOR A DACHAU CAMP LEADER Fine content T.L.S. on his 'Der Chef der Sicherheitspolizei und des SD' letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, Feb. 6, 1940, to WALTER SCHMITT (1879–1945) SS-Obergruppenfuhrer and General of the Waffen-SS who served as the Chief of the SS Personnel Main Office. In part: '...Re: Promotion of SS-Standartenfuhrer [Karl] d'Angelo, SS-No. 2,058, to SS-Oberfuhrer. I request that SS-Standartenfuhrer d'Angelo be promoted to SS-Oberfuhrer with effect from January 30, 1940...d'Angelo has been a member of the NSDAP since September 1925 under the number 21,616 and bearer of the Golden Medal of Honor. D'Angelo has been in the SS since January 28, 1930. D'Angelo is 50 years old and in the possession of the SA and Reich Sports Badge. Taking into account his services in the SS...d'Angelo has not been promoted since September 15, 1935, I ask that the promotion be approved...'. Initialed by Schmitt who adds three lines of holograph text at the bottom. File holes at the left margin, else very good. KARL D'ANGELO (1890-1945) served as commandant of the Osthofen concentration camp in 1933 and, in 1935, was transferred to Dachau to serve as the 'protective custody camp leader', the most important SS leader second only to the camp commander. Summarily dismissed by Eicke, he later served as police director in Cuxhaven, and from 1943 in Heilbronn. He and district leader Richard Drauz would leave the city every night, leading to huge loss of life during air raids due to his negligence. He threw himself into the Rhine and drowned in March, 1945 - never getting the promotion which Heydrich sought for him.
