REINHARD HEYDRICH
(1904 - 1942) 'The Hangman', Nazi head of the dreaded SS and architect of the 'Final Solution', his assassination in Prague caused severe reprisal actions, including the destruction of Lidice and murder of many of its inhabitants. Fine content T.L.S. on his official letterhead, 1p. 4to., Berlin, Sep. 20, 1938 to JOSEF BURCKEL (1895-1944) German politician, Gauleiter of the Saar Palatinate and Vienna. Heydrich reports on further information uncovered concerning KARL FREIHERR VON WERKMANN (1878-1951), arrested by the Gestapo in Vienna on March 14, 1938 and on April 1, 1938 taken to Dachau where he received prisoner number 13795. Heydrich writes, in part: '...Dear party comrade Burckel! Attached are some 'war games' presented by the head of the press department of the 'Reichbund der Osterreicher' and former head of the cabinet of Emperor Karl...The 'War Games' contain deployment plans of the Austrian army against the Reich. They were found during a search at the [home of] Baron v. Werkmann...' Ragged margins with some tears thereat, else good to very good.
