Description:

REINHARD HEYDRICH ASSASSINATION REWARD POSTER
An original, very rare reward poster for information leading to the arrest of Josef Valcik, [incorrectly named as Miroslav Valcik], a Czech resistance fighter instrumental in ‘Operation Anthropoid', 1p. small folio (18 x 13 in.), b/w, published in Prague, May 28, 1942, one day after Heydrich's assassination, and showing a smiling Valcik beneath the text: ‘100,000 Kronen Reward. Who knows this man and where he is hiding?'. The text continues: ‘This person is Miroslav Valcik, born on January 20, 1920 in Goding…about 1.65 [meters] tall, blond to light blond hair combed back…round full face, healthy ruddy complexion…clear skin…blue eyes…'. Published by the Gestapo and signed in text by Chief of the Gestapo Hans Geschke. Geschke (1907-1944?) was SS-Oberfuhrer who spearheaded the search for the assassins. He later became Chief of SD in Budapest, toppling the vacillating Hungarian Chief of State Miklos Horthy to win the allegiance of the far-right Arrow Cross party following Horthy's decision to spare the Jews of Budapest City by allowing some to escape on the ‘Kastner train' to Switzerland in 1944. Geschke is thought to have died during the Battle of Budapest but it is not confirmed. Regardless, he avoided the hangman's noose after the war, disappearing without a trace. Central fold, otherwise very good.
