Description:

REICH MINISTRY OF AVIATION ORIGINAL FLOOR PLANS AND SCHEMATICS
A fascinating portfolio of 29 original architectural schematics, 51" x 39" and smaller, depicting exterior elevation views, floor plans and construction details of the Berlin headquarters of the "Reichsluftfahrtministerium" ("Reich Ministry of Aviation"), or RLM. The schematics, all executed in pencil on architectural drafting vellum, each bear the title block "Neubauleitung Dr. Sagebiel (R.L.M.)" ["New Construction Line Dr. Sagebiel (R.L.M.)"], neatly identifying the specific building depicted and its chief architect, Ernst Sagebiel. These title boxes also bear the warning "Diese Zeichnung wird Nur Leihweise Uberlassen!" ("This Drawing is Only Loaned!") Two schematics present exterior elevation views, each clearly titled "Das Reichsluftfahrtministerium Berlin" and labeled "Garten Ansicht" ("Garden View", with the scale "M[asstaab] 1:100". These depict the rear exposure of the building, adjacent to the garden, and both also feature a small inset aerial plan of the overall layout of the building. The portfolio also includes four schematics depicting minute details of the construction of a set of stairs, windows frames, and methods of attaching decorative cornices, the latter in colored pencil. The remainder of the drawings consist of overhead interior floor plans, depicting the building's colonnaded main entrance, hallways, offices, restrooms, and the basement-level parking garage. The title blocks also include the signatures or printed names of a number of architectural drafters: "Werner", "Schmitt", "Winkler", "Bartsch", "Gobel", "Ebrecht", etc. The schematics are all bound together into a single portfolio with a steel "Planspiral" binder. The collection shows some condition issues, with the larger schematics showing notable tears and resultant paper loss to the edges, resulting in some cases in the loss of the title box and sections of the schematic. Nevertheless, this remains a fascinating document of National Socialist architecture, certainly worthy of further study and research. The RLM building, located on the Wilhelmstrasse in central Berlin, was constructed between February 1935 and August 1936, following a design by Ernst Sagebiel, who completed numerous other projects for the Luftwaffe, including the modernization of Tempelhof Airport. It was one of the few public buildings in Berlin to escape serious damage during World War II, and its ceremonial hall hosted the founding of the German Democratic Republic, which utilized it as a governmental center. The building is now known as the "Detlev-Rohwedder-Haus".
