Description:

RED HORSE - LITTLE BIGHORN VETERAN
Excellent D.F. Barry cabinet photograph of Red Horse, a Mnikowuju Lakota chief, who contributed much to the Lakotas' struggle to retain their traditional lifeway during the so-called "Sioux Wars." A veteran of the Battle of the Little Bighorn, Red Horse described the fighting on Calhoun Hill as being among the hardest. After the battle Red Horse documented the engagement with a series of forty-one pictographic ledger drawings that remain one of the most important primary sources on the battle. With one of Barry's clipped and pasted name labels on recto, and his Bismarck and Standing Rock, D.T. backmark, this is an excellent example of a famous image that now rarely comes to market. Albumen is clean and crisp; light soiling on the card otherwise excellent.
