Description:

RED CLOUD
Both Barry and Cross published and claimed copyright on this photograph although it was not their work, the credit belonging to Frank A. Bowman who took the picture in 1883. Red Cloud was by then firmly established as a force to be reckoned with on the reservation, just as he had been on the battlefield in his younger years, and then later when galvanizing support to oppose the Bozeman Trail in 1866, which resulted in "Red Cloud's War," the only war in American history that the US concedes it lost. Fine W.R. Cross dark green cabinet with ornate back mark from Cross's "Hot Springs, S. Dak." period. Image is very good save some light vertical rubbing at center and chips at the edges.
