RARE MORMON NEWSPAPER: THE DESERET NEWS
A copy of the Salt Lake City newspaper The Deseret News, Wed. Aug. 27, 1856, No. 25 Vol. VI, 8pp. 10 3/4" x 15", with much interesting content. The first three pages reprint a "History of Joseph Smith dated from the year 1843, in very small part: "...We should cultivate sympathy for the afflicted among us. If there is a place on earth where men should cultivate this spirit, and pour in the oil and wine in the bosoms of the afflicted...I will tell you what I want; if to-morrow I shall be called to lay in yonder tomb, in the morning of the resurrection, let me strike hands with my father, and cry, my father...". Intermixed with spiritual discourse is a recounting of his day-to-day activities, selling of land, writing of letters to governmental bodies, and so forth. On the fourth page the news of the day begins with "Progress of the War - The Price of Peace" and "Extracts from a Child's History of the United States" which reads, in part: "...A very grave question arose before the Senate and House of Representatives...A gentleman by the name of SUMNER made use of very bad language...". With editorials following and classifieds at the back. Spindle holes at left margin, otherwise very good condition.
