BRIGHAM YOUNG
(1801 - 1877) Leader of the Mormon church who succeeded Joseph Smith as head of the church and led the mass migration to Salt Lake Valley. Young was also the first governor of Utah Territory. Scarce partly-printed D.S. 1p. 16mo. (4" x 2"), "G.[reat]S.[alt]L.[ake]", Jan. 20,. 1849, a sight draft for two dollars payable to N. K. Whitney, or bearer. Signed "B. Young", along with Mormon elder HEBER C. KIMBALL (1801-1868), who served as First Counsel to Young and in other important capacities within the church. With blind-embossed seal at center, very good. Along with a trimmed carte-de-visite portrait of Young by C. R. Savage, Pioneer Art Gallery, Salt Lake City.
