RALPH WALDO EMERSON
(1803 - 1882) American poet and friend of Alcott, Thoreau and Hawthorne, he was the American advocate of transcendentalism. Rare partly-printed D.S. "R. Waldo Emerson", a check made out and signed by Emerson, Boston, Mar. 19, 1863 drawing on the Atlantic Bank to make a $364.04 payment to J. M. Cheney. The check is tipped into his book Society and Solitude (Boston: Fields, Osgood & Co., 1870). A fine carte-de-visite image of the poet is pasted to the inside cover, opposite the check. Book's covers and spine are worn and frayed, back cover a bit damaged, contents, check and photo are fine.
