RALPH IZARD
(1742 - 1804) American military officer who served at Washington''s headquarters, instrumental in Greene''s appointment to the Southern Army, and pledged his large estate to fund the construction of American warships. A YELLOW FEVER EPIDEMIC IN PHILADELPHIA A.L.S. with integral address leaf, 1p. 4to., Oct. 24, 1793 to John Vaughan in Chester, Pa. In part: "….It gives me much pleasure to learn that the disorder in Philadelphia is abated, & I most sincerely hope that health will soon be restored…The Newspapers gave a serious alarm to your friends…I shall continue here…with my family, & ten move to New York till it is known where Congress is to meet…I shall be extremely glad if the situation of affairs in Philadelphia may admit of our sitting there…". Fine condition. In late summer, 1793 a yellow fever epidemic swept through Philadelphia killing over 5,000 people. The plague passed allowing the Third Congress to reconvene in the city.
