Description:

RICHARD HOWE APPOINTS ALEXANDER INNES COMMANDER-IN-CHIEF OF THE JAMAICA STATION
RICHARD HOWE (1726 - 1799) British Admiral and First Lord of the Admiralty, commander of the British blockade of the colonies during the American Revolution, and later a commissioner of peace to the Americans. Brother of British General William Howe. Very fine manuscript D.S. on parchment as "Howe", 1p. folio, [London], Aug. 26, 1784, a naval commission for Rear Admiral ALEXANDER INNES (d. 1786), appointing him "...Commander in Chief of His [Majesty''s] Ships and Vessels employed and to be employed at and about the Island of Jamaica, and the Bahama Islands..." The document - Innes''s personal copy - is further signed by Charles Brett and Lord Arden, both Lords of the Admiralty, and bears two admiralty seals at the left edge. Original folds, else fine. Also present is a contemporary leather wallet, in which the document has been preserved. Presumably the wallet belonged to Innes as well. Two pieces. Prior to this appointment, Innes played an important role as secretary to William Campbell, the last British governor of South Carolina. In this capacity, he was responsible for gathereing intelligence on the political situation in Charleston, which he provided to Campbell and the secretary of State for the Colonies, William Legge.
