Description:

(RAFAEL TRUJILLO) THE DOMINICAN AIR FORCE UNIFORM OF RAMFIS TRUJILLO
RAFAEL LEONIDAS TRUJILLO (1929–1969) 'Ramfis', son of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, dictator of the Dominican Republic, after whose 1961 assassination he briefly held power. In the immediate aftermath, Ramfis executed most of the conspirators. By November 1961, the Trujillo family was pressured into exile by the titular president Joaquín Balaguer, who introduced reforms to open up the regime. The murder ushered in civil strife which concluded with the Dominican Civil War and a US-OAS intervention, and eventually stabilized under a multi-party system in 1966. Nominally an army general and chief of the Dominican Air Force, he lived the life of a reckless and spoiled playboy. Remembered for his ruthlessness and cruelty, he went into exile in Spain, where he died of wounds ten days after crashing a sports car. Offered here is the dress uniform owned and worn by Trujillo as commanding general of the air force of the Dominican Republic. The uniform, a medium weight navy blue wool outfit, has slip-on shoulder boards trimmed in gold braid, each sporting an enameled pin with the Dominican coat of arms affixed thereto. The right breast bears Trujillo's flight wings, gold-toned an again with an enameled coat of arms, made by M.S. Meyer, Inc. The left shoulder bears a cloth patch with the emblem of the Dominican Air Force, and the lapels each have 'R.D.' and 'wing-and-prop' metal insignia. An elaborate medal ribbon bar is affixed above the left breast pocket. The sleeves of the garment each terminate with a single ribbon of gold wire, along with a purple scalloped section of cloth with three brass buttons. The front of the jacket has two of the four original brass buttons, the others not present. Within, the jacket is fully lined and has a tailor's label from 'Casa Paris' in Ciudad Trujillo. The accompanying black trousers bear broad black and white-trimmed side trim, two vertical pockets, an a watch pocket at front. Fine. Also present is Trujillo's peaked visor cap, heavily ornamented with gold bullion trim about the brim and front, gold wire chin strap, and metal national emblem pinned to the front. Slightly dusty, with a chip to the front of the brim. Made by Meyer, New York. See photograph of Trujillo wearing this uniform.
