Description:

(RAFAEL TRUJILLO) THE DOMINICAN AIR FORCE UNIFORM OF RAMFIS TRUJILLO
RAFAEL LEONIDAS TRUJILLO (1929–1969) 'Ramfis', son of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo, dictator of the Dominican Republic, after whose 1961 assassination he briefly held power. In the immediate aftermath, Ramfis executed most of the conspirators. By November 1961, the Trujillo family was pressured into exile by the titular president Joaquín Balaguer, who introduced reforms to open up the regime. The murder ushered in civil strife which concluded with the Dominican Civil War and a US-OAS intervention, and eventually stabilized under a multi-party system in 1966. Nominally an army general and chief of the Dominican Air Force, he lived the life of a reckless and spoiled playboy. Remembered for his ruthlessness and cruelty, he went into exile in Spain, where he died of wounds ten days after crashing a sports car. Offered here is the elaborate dress mess jacket owned and worn by Trujillo, most likely as commanding general of the air force of the Dominican Republic. The jacket is constructed of medium weight black wool. Very ornate slip-on shoulder boards are laden with gold wire braiding over woven red, white and blue cord, and a metal pin showing the coat of arms of the Dominican Republic appears at the end of each board. The boards are topped with four gold-toned conjoined general's stars. The right shoulder board also supports an red and gold wire lanyard, the ends of which bear crowns at their top ends. The left shoulder board in turn supports a red, white, and blue braided lanyard. The lapels of the jacket each have 'R.D.' and 'wing-and-prop' metal insignia, and metal and cloth ribbons are affixed to the left breast. The sleeves of the garment each terminate with six ribbons of gold wire, along with a white scalloped section of cloth with three brass buttons. The front of the double-breasted jacket has all four original brass buttons. Within, the jacket is fully lined and it bears a long tail in the rear. Fine. See photograph of Trujillo wearing this uniform.
