Description:

'RACIAL HYGIENE', ISSUED IN NORWAY
Rare illustrated book: 'Rasehygiene' by Jon Alfred Mjoen (Oslo: Jacob Dybwads Forlag), 1938. 336pp. 8vo. in illustrated dust wrapper. A very involved, heavily illustrated text on eugenics as it was described at the time, although the dust wrapper shows at top three blonde 'Nordic' children above an image of two black infants eating watermelon. Within the text describes racial characteristics of Asians, blacks, Arabs, etc. with photographs, also describing the dangers of 'inbreeding' and 'race mixing' which the author feared was creating more and more 'inferior' individuals, stressing how important it was to preserve and refine the Nordic race. Author Mjoen (1860-1939) was best known for his studies in racial biology and eugenics in Norway. His thoughts on racial hygiene and the preservation of a Nordic race met with much opposition in his home country.
