Description:

PRUSSIAN RED CROSS PRESENTATION SWORD BY PACK, OHLIGER & CO.
A very fine Imperial German presentation sword in the pattern of an M1848 Artillery Saber, 29.5 in. blade, 34.5 in. overall, featuring a gently-curved, single-edge blade with a wide fuller running three-fourths of the length. Most interestingly, the reverse ricasso side of the blade bears a finely-executed etched presentation: ‘Aus Dankbarkeit ihrem Auhrer Herrn Julius Mummenhoff gemidmet Die Mitgliederder Freiwilligen-Sanitatskolonne vom roten Kreuz. Bochum.' (‘Out of gratitude to their founder, Mr. Julius Mummenhoff, the members of the volunteer medical corps of the Red Cross, Bochum, present this.') The presentation is executed on a blued ground, and surrounded by a floral motif. This motif is executed in full on the obverse of the blade. The ricasso bears the ‘giant' marl of maker Pack, Ohliger & Co. of Solingen. The multi-piece brass hilt features brass protectors over the ricasso, the reverse ricasso side mounted with a miniature Prussian Order of the Black Eagle shield. The grip is covered with gray sharkskin and wrapped with braided brass wire. The sword is housed in a blued steel scabbard with a single suspension ring. The blade shows minor freckling in places, while the brass hardware shows an even patina overall. The wire wrap over the grip is coming loose. The scabbard shows some freckling overall, and the chape shows a large dent and is slightly bent. In very good, attractive condition overall.
