Description:

IMPERIAL GERMAN M1849 ARTILLERY SABER BY WKC
A fine, unit-marked example of an Imperial German M1849 Artillery Saber, 29.5 in. blade, 35.25 in. overall, featuring a brightly-polished, curved blade with a wide fuller running to within 3.5 in. of the tip. The reverse ricasso is maker-marked ‘Weyersberg Kirschbaum & Cie.', or WKC, the mark obscured by the shield extension of the hilt. The spine of the blade bears a proof mark depicting a crowned letter ‘W' over ‘09'. The dovehead-style steel multipiece hilt shows numerous markings, most prominently the unit marking '13. A. F. E. B. 68.' on the obverse ricasso side of the crossguard, most likely indicating a foot artillery regiment. Proof marks in the from of a crowned letter ‘B' are present on the blade side of the crossguard, the backstrap and the grip collar. The grip is grooved brown bakelite. The sword is housed in a blued steel scabbard with a single fixed suspension loop. The throat bears a different unit mark, ‘L. F. A. R. 13. 8. 31.', likely for a light field artillery regiment. The blade shows sharpening marks, with light scratches overall and grease residue from the scabbard, while the hilt shows notable oxidation overall. The scabbard shows patches of oxidation throughout. In very good condition overall.
