Description:

PRESIDENTS AND FIRST LADIES
A collection of four letters to the late Senator Paul Simon (1928 - 2003) including GEORGE H. BUSH T.N.S., "George" on a personalized, embossed note card, 1p., 12mo., [Houston, Tex.], Jan. 27, 1999, in full: "Thanks so much for the thoughtful letter. Barbara Bush, your biggest fan, sends her warmest best wishes, as do I". Barbara Bush and Senator Simon shared a strong interest in promoting literacy in America and often worked together. Stapled in the upper left corner to the original transmittal envelope, very good; BARBARA BUSH, T.L.S. "Barbara" on Walker's Point letterhead, 1p. 8vo., June 24, 1997, responding to an invitation to sit on the National Advisory Board of the Public Policy Institute at Southern Illinois University, in part: "... With George and Jeb in the public arena, I am trying to stay out of political issues altogether and trying, instead, to concentrate on my number one cause - family literacy". In a holographic postscript she adds: "All the best and forgive me, Paul, but I am way overcommitted". Stapled in the top left corner to the original transmittal envelope; very good; JAMES E. CARTER T.L.S. "Jimmy" as President on White House letterhead, 1p. 8vo., Nov. 27, 1978; sending birthday wishes. Uneven toning, scattered stains, and clear tape at top of letter, fair; and a second T.L.S. "Jimmy" on Carter Center letterhead, 1p. 4to., Atlanta, July 6, 1998, originally sent with a copy of The Carter Center's final report regarding their observation of the 1997 Liberia elections. In part: "I want to thank you again for participating in our election observation delegation...Your role as co-leader of the delegation was especially important.". Four pieces, very good.
