Description:

PRESIDENT & VICE PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFULS
Fine lot of four cabinet photographs, ca. 1880's, of prominent American politicians who set their sights on the office of President or Vice-President without success. Includes: Allen Granbery Thurman (Grover Cleveland's running mate in 1888, they were defeated by Benjamin Harrison and Levi Morton); excellent photograph, ca. 1887, of James G. Blaine (he won the popular vote in the election of 1876 only to watch Rutherford B. Hayes steal the presidency through a Congressional caucus); a very early cabinet photograph of William A. Wheeler (in 1876 he accepted the Vice President's slot on the Rutherford B. Hayes ticket in a contested election, only to have his political future end); cabinet photograph of Walter Quinton Gresham, depicted in a waist-up image (Gresham held the cabinet posts of Postmaster General, Sec. of the Treasury and Sec. of State, however, he could not secure the position he wanted most, the Presidency); also included in this lot is a fine copy of Napoleon Sarony's cabinet photograph, 1892, of President Grover Cleveland; finally, a cabinet photo of First Lady Lucretia Garfield, wife of President James Garfield. Very good or better.
