Crawford thanking him for setting the record straight on the role of the Pennsylvania Reserve Corps in beating back the Longstreet's assault of July 2nd as his victorious men surged over Devil's Den and the Wheatfield, threatening the slopes of Little Round Top. In part: "...Permit me to return you my sincere thanks for the trouble to which you had gone to furnish me &...Mr. Everett with the requisite data to place the men of your command in the honorable position which they defended in the eyes of the nation & world. In...I felt that not only was injustice done me personally as giving fiction for truth, but...to the men who have so often been put forward in the hottest of the fight...doing honor to their native state...those men...at the critical moment of the battle & in sight of their homes turned back the enemy & put him to flight, should be represented...as mere lookers on...I hope that some one will make the corrections...I shall use the materials you furnished me...in the new & enlarged edition...I will take the liberty of using some of the additional facts I may find useful to my condensed history of the Battle of Gettysburg...". At the time of the battle of Gettysburg, Michael Jacobs was a 55-year-old professor of mathematics and natural philosophy at Gettysburg College. During the struggle, he took copious notes on the sights and sounds that swirled around him. When the armies left and the dust settled, Jacobs published his journal as the above-named book, which to this today is considered one of the best eyewitness accounts of the battle. Very good to fine.   $800 - 1,000
