Description:

178. UNION SIGNAL CORPS CODES FOR IRONCLAD CSS GEORGIA A rare war-date manuscript Union Signal Corps document, 2pp. 4to., signed by Chief Acting Signal Officer 1st Lt. E. J. Keenan, 11th P. R. C., Hilton Head, S. C., Oct. 28, 1862. It comprises a list of six lantern signals and their corresponding codes related to the feared attacked on the Union blockading forces by the newly built CSS Georgia, an ironclad that resembled the shape and size of the CSS Merrimac. In part: "...I have prepared a code of Signal Lights to be used with reference to the Ram [CSS Georgia] and Floating Battery, supposed to be fitting out at Savannah...'A'=Red- White- Red=...the Ram is on its way down the river from Savannah...'O'=White-Red-Green=...it [Ram] has returned up the river...'8'=Green-White...it has passed the Fort and is now on its way out...'6'=Red-Green...the Floating Battery has come down the river...you will...secure the attention of the next station...by sending up a rocket...after sending the message...you will repeat the message and...continue until you are understood...". In late 1862, the CSS Georgia did sail; for the remainder of the war she helped protect Savannah from Union attack until Sherman's March to the Sea, at which time she was blown up. Very good. $300 - 400
