Description:

PORCELAIN PLATE FROM HITLER'S PRIVATE TRAIN CAR
An especially rare, possibly unique piece of Third Reich porcelain, a lunch plate, 9 1/2" dia., used aboard Adolf Hitler's first private railcar. The plate is white porcelain, with a gilt rim, decorated at the edge with a gilt national eagle and the initials "D R", for "Deutsche Reichsbahn" ("German National Railway"). The base bears the underglaze mark of the Nymphenburg porcelain manufactory in green, with a second blind mark adjacent. Most interestingly, the base bears the numeral "203." in black glaze; this indicates that the plate was used aboard the Deutsche Reichsbahn sleeper car designated "10 203", which served as Hitler's private car from his becoming Fuhrer in 1934 until 1937. This style of marking matches that seen on porcelain items used aboard the private railcars of other NSDAP leaders, including Hermann Goering, Heinrich Himmler and Joachim von Ribbentrop, as well as on cars in regular service. However, the only other record of porcelain from Hitler's car "10 203" comes from page 224 of "The Special Trains of Hitler, Goering et al", by James A. Yannes, which lists a teacup utilizing the same decorative design and indentifying inscription, now owned by a collector in Northern Ireland. Excerpts from this reference are included with the plate presented here, incorporating several other mentions of Hitler's use of this car. After 1937, Hitler ceased use of car "10 203" and instead occupied car "10 206", which was destroyed along with its contents at war's end in 1945. This being the case, the plate presented here represents the only known piece of Deutsche Reichsbahn porcelain utilized aboard one of Hitler's private rail cars and still available on the market. The plate shows an approx. 1/2" dia. semi-circular chip to the underside of the rim, with some wear to the gilt edge decoration and slight soiling overall, else very good. With correspondence researching the piece.
