Description:

EVA BRAUN'S BLUE WOOL HAT, WITH POSSIBLE HOLOCAUST CONNECTION
A rare personal item owned by Hitler's mistress and eventual wife Eva Braun - a blue wool hat made by hatmaker Berta Heymann...possibly the same Berta Heymann from Munich who was sent to her death at Treblinka in 1942. The well-made wool hat was quite stylish in its time - the brim had a rolled edge and rose in the back, and the hat was accented with a matching blue ribbon tied at right. A thin elastic cord is fitted to the cap, and a black "sweat band" is sewn within. At the rear, the band bears Braun's embroidered "butterfly" monogram on a 1" sq. section of black silk sewn to the sweat band. This embroidery exactly matches in size and style embroidered monograms we have encountered in Braun's clothes recovered from those cached by her sister, Gretl, prior to Eva's suicide. The band also bears the maker's label, gold thread-embroidery from "Berta Heymann" of Munich. Research included shows that one "Berta Heymann" of Munich, born 1872, was transported to Terezin and then Treblinka where4 she was murdered in 1942. The hat is accompanied by one of Braun's calling cards, 4" x 2 1/2", an early design previously unknown to us with "Fraulein" preceding her name. The card shows genuine aging and foxed spots. A grim reminder.
