Description:

POLISH JEW'S STAR OF DAVID PATCH, CLOTHING-REMOVED
Exceedingly rare blue and white Polish-issue embroidered Star of David, used by a Polish Jew during the Second World War. These were worn so Jews could be publicly identified - and vilified - by the German occupation authorities, its collaborators and sympathizers. The 3.5 in. wide crude cloth patch is in lightly worn condition. It still retains holes from having been hand-sewn to a garment, as well as some of the original white cotton threads used in the application. The reverse shows that the edges of the star were folded-over before it was sewn to a garment, and these folds have clearly been present for a very long period of time. Some soiling, else very good. The vast majority of such badges are in unused condition, this 'worn' example is especially rare. From a 50+ year British collection. On 23 November 1939 Hans Frank, the Nazi Governor-General of occupied Poland, decreed that all Jews in Poland over the age of 10 were to wear a white badge with a blue Star of David on their right arm. This continued until September 1941, when all Jews in occupied Europe over the age of six were required to wear a yellow Star of David. Thus, this represents one of the earliest attempts to publicly identify Jews.
