Lot 1508
1508. CAMILLE PISSARRO (1830 - 1903) French painter and contemporary of Monet, identified with the Impressionists and later with pointillism. Charming A.L.S. "C. Pissarro" 2pp. 8vo., Rouen, Sept. 14, 1898, in French on black-bordered mourning letterhead to his son, Rodolphe. Pissarro writes a fatherly, if not admonishing letter, in part: "...I hope you're not neglecting your gymnastics, no kidding! You know that it's absolutely necessary to develop your chest...October is not a good month to cross the Channel...Come back on a nice day, and if you need a warm overcoat, you should have it made. I'll send you the money...What you're saying about climate discussions doesn't mean anything. There are years in which humidity is high in France and low in England...it's obvious that...England in general, is the foggiest country among all. One doesn't need scientists to know that...Amen! Can you pass Rouen on your way back? You can do that, can't you?...". Ludovic-Rodolphe Pissarro (1878 - 1952) was the fourth son of Pissarro, and an artist in his own right. The year of our letter, Rodo, as he was called, moved to a studio in Monmartre with his brother Georges, and began a series of works around the celebrated night-life of fin-de-siecle Paris. His paintings were part of the first Fauvist exhibition of 1905. Boldly penned. Matted with two images and set into a handsome gilt frame. With complete transcription. Fine condition, not examined out of frame. $700 - 900
