Description:

"PIPER" BILL MILLIN
"PIPER" BILL MILLIN (1922 - 2010) British soldier, personal piper to Simon Fraser, 15th Lord Lovat, commander of 1 Special Service Brigade at D-Day. Millin is best remembered for playing the pipes whilst under fire during the D-Day landing in Normandy. Millin stated that he later talked to captured German snipers who claimed they did not shoot at him because they thought he had gone mad. Fine A.D.S. signed twice "Piper Bill Millin", penned within a Christmas card ca. 1990, 14' x 5 1/4' (open), in part: "My memory of the landings in Normandy on D-Day was I had been very seasick on the night journey...cramped into a very small landing craft on a stormy sea. So the finest sight for me was the French coast at 5 AM...I had to get off the landing craft at all costs so jumping into the sea and wading ashore playing the pipes is my fondest memory. At last I was on firm ground and prepared to endure anything that day rather than remain on the heaving landing craft..." Fine.
