Description:

(BATTLE OF BASTOGNE) HARRY W. KINNARD
HARRY W. KINNARD (1915 – 2009) American general officer who, during the Vietnam War, pioneered the airmobile concept of sending troops into battle using helicopters. At Bastogne, Kinnard served under Gen. Anthony McAuliffe as the division's operations officer. It was at Kinnard's suggestion that McAuliffe made his famous response to the German surrender ultimatum: "Nuts!" Pair of T.L.S.s on his lieutenant general's letterhead, 2pp. total, 8vo., 1997-98. In one letter, Kinnard mentions the German generals commanding the opposing forces at Bastogne. He mentions that after the war, an "interrogation center" was opened near Paris to interview German officers. He states that the German generals were: "...much older than I, and were visibly shaken when Marshall told them I had beaten them in the battle...I was not terribly impressed by the German generals...it was thought to be General Lutwitz [who sent the surrender message]...". The second letter mentions the "Nuts!" episode, and Kinnartd's "Hole in the Doughnut" response to the VIII Corps G-3". Fine.
