Description:

PIERRE-MARIE LE BOZEC'S LA REPUBLICAINE ACCOUNTS BOOK
Rare relic from the days of revolutionary France's high-seas privateering adventures, a 1799 accounts book from the French corsair La Republicaine", captained by highly decorated naval officer PIERRE-MARIE LE BOZEC. The book, titled "Livre C", 11pp., folio, contains over a hundred accounting entries from 1799, in French, including entries for, "un Brazil vin, Eau de vie" and other alcohols to a credit for, "les Neigres Malades", an early French spelling for ill African slaves. Boldly signed, "Le Bozec" in two places at the end of the document. La Republicaine was a 24-gun Unite class corvette in operation from 1794-1799, with Le Bozec in command for the duration. She began operations in Norway, then privateered in the English Channel throughout 1795, moving on to Brazil and Africa in 1796. La Republicaine captured the American Robert Gray's ship Alert in 1798 during the Quasi-War, and was finally captured by the British ship Tamar in August 1799 off the coast of Surinam, with 70 African slaves found onboard. Citizen Le Bozec would go on to take part in the attempted capture of Santo Domingo and Port-au-Prince, would be named a Chevalier de St. Louis in 1814, and would retire a Rear Admiral. Condition is very good considering its use at sea, with moderate folds and slight foxing and fraying.
