CHARLES MAURICE DE TALLEYRAND
(1754 - 1838) French statesman and Minister of Foreign Affairs (1797- 1807), created grand chamberlain by Napoléon whith whom he later quarreled, opposing emperor's Russian and Spanish policy. At Napoléon' s fall, he was instrumental in securing the restoration of the monarchy. Cryptic A.L.S. "T:m", 1p. 8vo., [n.p., n.d.], in French to "Citizen Lemaitre", in part: "...You are very good and kind. As soon as I have read the papers, I shall return them to Mr. Bel Ami. My fever is gone. You really should go to dinner in the country at Mr. Sieveking's house...". Sieveking may possibly be G. H. Sieveking (1751-1799), a German merchant-prince and Illuminist. A hand-delivered communiqué, possibly quite confidential, it is addressed on verso in Talleyrand's hand and bears the stateman's red-wax seal. Docketed on verso in an unknown hand. Small seal tear in integral address leaf, otherwise in very good condition.
