Pierre G. T. Beauregard 1818-1893 Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter which started the Civil War. Beauregard also led with great distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. War date manuscript orders concerning a Confederate mid, with two pencil A.D.S's thereon signed with initials G.T.B. . This important document, 2pp. 4to., Head Quarters Ist Corps A.P. Near Centreville [Va.] , Jan. 14, 1862 is written in the hand of C.S.A. Brigadier General Thomas Jordan 1819-:1895 It reads in part: a considerable portion of the federal general Banks forces have been diverted circumstances may favor a sudden blow at your immediate adversary such are the wishes of the general Commanding [Beauregardl essential that the utmost caution and secrecy must be observed guides must be secured... ascertain by all practicable means the precise position of Genl. Stone's troops. Beauregard writes at conclusion: ...The above properly revised will do. G.TB. and adds in margin on first page: Colored light (lanterns) might be used for signals of recognition - but the forces should keep well together, & make slight return if necessary to take the Yankees in the rear - but point of proposed recrossing must be well guarded with some artillery. G.TB. Small newspaper clipping attached to blank bottom of last page affects nothing.
