Description:

(PHILIP VI)
(1293-1350) King of France from 1328 to 1350, the first from the House of Valois. The dispute between him and Edward III of England over rightful succession to the French throne sparked the Hundred Years'' War. Manuscript document in a secretarial hand on parchment, 1p. 12 1/2" x 3 1/2", [Paris], Jan. 17, 1350. In full: "By the king. Our gentlemen of our exchequer let our dear treasurers at Paris pay 79 livres and 10 sous tournois on my command to Jehan Colombel for the cloth needed for two robes, one for Charles our very dear oldest son and the other for Phillippe our very dear brother, 7 cannes [a unit of measurement] of scarlet, at 8 livres 10 sous tournois per canne, and 7 cannes of silk, 57 sous turnois per canne, also for the furriers of said robes of which it takes 1500 ventres, each 2 sous tournois, and 8 latisques [a white fur], each at 5 sous tournois, for the cloches [trimmings of the robes] 7 20 12 livres tournois which the said treasurers have likewise paid on our command to Arnaut Sabatier, furrier at Montpelliers. The seventeenth day of January, the year 1350" With the secretarial signature of a Jean Mathieu at the conclusion, again adding "Par le Roy" ("By the King"). Dated in a later hand at the top edge, with traces of a wax seal at the conclusion, and with a paper knot at the left edge. Shows folds, with paper loss at upper left, else very good. Includes a typed translation. Philip and all previous French kings typically did not sign their names to official; documents; as is the case here, the secretarial statement "De par le Roy" ("By the King") sufficed. Jehan Colombel was a wealthy merchant based in Avignon, best remembered historically for his contributions to bookbinding.
