Description:

(PHILIP VI)
(1293-1350) King of France from 1328 to 1350, the first from the House of Valois. The dispute between him and Edward III of England over rightful succession to the French throne sparked the Hundred Years'' War. Manuscript document in a secretarial hand on parchment, 1p. 8 3/4" x 2", Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Nov. 1, 1328, to a "de Roen". In full: "...Greetings. We command you that the permission that we have given to our beloved and faithful knight Aubert de Hangest, Lord of Genlis to levy an assessment upon his men and upon those persons liable to assessment as a result of our last expedition into Flanders will be allowed to him to be raised and exploited without any embarrassment in any such manner as to cause him misfortune. Given at St. Germaine en Laye the first day of November in the year one thousand three hundred and twenty-eight." Upper left corner cut affecting the first name of the recipient, with expected folds and slight soiling, else very good. Includes a typed transcription and translation, and biographical sketches of the individuals mentioned. Philip and all previous French names typically did not sign their names to official; documents. Here, the secretarial statement "De par le Roy" ("By the King") sufficed. AUBERT V DE HANGEST (c.1263-1329), lord of the Genlis commune in eastern France, was an eminent French statesman and knight who participated in the Flandrian Wars of 1296-1297, and who acted as royal diplomat to Gascogne, England and Scotland. In 1319 he negotiated the peace between the Countess of Artois and the French nobility.
