Description:

PHILIP VAN CORTLANDT
(1749-1831) American Revolutionary War patriot, soldier, surveyor, New York landowner, and politician from Westchester County who was commissioned Colonel of the Second New York Regiment by General George Washington on November 30, 1776, and took an active part in the Revolution. Scarce A.L.S. "Ph. V. Cortlandt" 1p. 4to., Croton, Mar. 29, 1797, to his father, Pierre Van Cortlandt. In part: "Mama hinted to me the other day when I was at Peeks Kill that you wished to remove to this Place and that you was depriving yourself of that gratification because you had given it out of yr hands and consequently could not with propriety retain it; this may be sound reasoning but as it respects my feelings permit me to assure you...if you like do not delay removing but come when ever you think proper and as it pleases...I hope however that the land South of Croton may be considered as intirely Subject to my Controul [sic]...I may also wish to build and improve Some lands near Odles Spring...". Light toning, otherwise in very good condition.
