Description:

GEORGE CLYMER
(1739 - 1813) Signer of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, a member of the Continental Congress and the 1st Congress. Historic content A.L.S. "Geo Clymer", 2pp. 8vo., New York, [n.d., but certainly 1787], to fellow Pennsylvania Signer James Wilson. In part: "...I had determined ag[ains] t [?] our assembly believing my presence there would rather injure than aid the cause of the [Constitutional?] Convention; or any other cause I should I should attach myself to, so full are all our letters of the resoundings of rage and violence against us for a late vote. If it is however thought my duty to meet a storm I will not fail to do it. But when I shall quit this place is not certain. Thursday a question concerning permanent residency is to be brought by the Penna. delegates...I ought to be in another place here is a choice of curses left for me - having learnt that I was not sent here to judge but to be judged...". He adds in a postscript: "I don't know what Mr. Tilghman intends". With detached address leaf addressed in Clymer's hand to Wilson, then in Philadelphia, franked "Free G. Clymer". Very good. Of course, in 1787 our seat of government was in New York, where Clymer, a drafter of the Constitution, may have been wooing the difficult New York delegates. Pennsylvania would ratify the Constitution on Dec. 12, 1787, with New York not falling in line until July 26, 1788. Matthew Tilghman (1718-1790) was a signer of the Olive Branch Petition, a member of the Continental Congress, and had a few years earlier retired from the presidency of the Maryland Senate.
