Description:

PHILIP ST. GEORGE COCKE
(1809-1861) Confederate brigadier general best known for organizing the defenses of Virginia along the Potomac after secession. Served at First Manassas before becoming despondent and committing suicide. Rare war-date A.L.S. as colonel of Virginia volunteers, 1p. 4to., 'Camp Henry', Culpeper Court House, June 21, 1861 - exactly one month before First Manassas - to Virginia Gov. John Letcher. In part: '...I am informed that Capt. J[ohn]. T. Ellis...of one of the Companies of...the 19: Va. Vol:...intends to apply to be appointed a Col of Volunteers. Capt. Ellis is a graduate of the Va. Mil. Institute...He is an excellent officer and I doubt not if promoted would be excelled by few in devotion to the public service in zeal and in efficiency...'. Very light offsetting else very good. Capt. John T. Ellis would be promoted to major and then to lieutenant colonel in 1862, and wounded at Gaines Mill in 1862. Recovering in time to rejoin his regiment before Gettysburg, he was killed on the field by a shell fragment during the Union bombardment which preceded Pickett's Charge.
