Description:

PIERRE G. T. BEAUREGARD
(1818 - 1893) Confederate major general who initiated the attack on Fort Sumter which started the Civil War. Beauregard also led with great distinction at First Bull Run, Shiloh, and in the defense of Richmond. War-date manuscript L.S., 1p. 4to., Charleston, May 25, 1861, writing to Benjamin Allston, who only the day previously was promoted to colonel. Only six weeks after the bombardment of Fort Sumter, Beauregard writes, in part: ‘…As I expect very soon to leave this station, and as I am about to transfer my command here, I shall no longer need the services which – regardless alike of your personal comfort or interest – you so kindly and willingly rendered to me and as a volunteer member of my staff. Your assistance came at a moment when I most needed such valuable aid, and I earnestly thank you for it, as well as your continued…attention in the less interesting detail of official duties, to the present time…' Some toning at margins due prior framing, else very good. Beauregard had been summoned to Richmond where he was given command of the ‘Alexandria Line' of defenses against an impending Federal offensive that was being organized by Brig. Gen. Irvin McDowell (one of Beauregard's West Point classmates) against the Confederate railroad junction at Manassas. First Bull Run was on the horizon two months hence. BENJAMIN ALLSTON (1833-1900) was a wealthy rice planter and Confederate colonel whose family owned over 600 slaves. He would lead a cavalry brigade in East Tennessee and would be captured at Cumberland Gap.
